With heavy hearts and unshakable sorrow, the Apex High School community and the entire town mourn the tragic loss of Samantha Faith Mele, a radiant soul whose life ended far too soon. Samantha, a beloved student, cherished daughter, dear friend, and vibrant presence, passed away in April 2025, leaving a profound void in the hearts of all who knew her.
A Light That Shined Brightly
Samantha, affectionately known as Sam by her closest friends, was a source of joy, warmth, and positivity. Whether it was her infectious laughter in the hallways of Apex High, her dedication to her studies, or the way she lifted others with a kind word or a hug, Samantha had a special gift: she made people feel seen, heard, and loved.
Teachers, classmates, and community members alike speak of her bright spirit and generous heart. She was the kind of person who would reach out to someone sitting alone, who encouraged others during stressful moments, and who celebrated her friends’ victories as if they were her own.

Lavender-purple, Samantha’s favorite color, was a perfect reflection of her personality — soft yet powerful, calming yet strikingly memorable. In her presence, you felt safe, accepted, and inspired.
A Message from the Heart of the Community
In response to her passing, Mayor Jacques K. Gilbert shared a heartfelt statement:
“Our hearts continue to ache as we mourn the loss of Samantha Faith Mele — a beloved student at Apex High School whose light and laughter touched so many lives. In times of sorrow, Apex shows who we truly are. We come together. We support one another. We wrap our arms around those who are hurting. That’s what makes our town so special. To the Mele family — and to all who knew and loved Samantha — we stand with you. Even in our hardest moments, Apex stands together. We are a town that leads with love.”
Mayor Gilbert’s words echo the deep pain felt by the community and also the strength that emerges in unity and compassion.
